NEW LEAF is a small independent publishing company based in Washington state, USA with a focus on teaching literacy to non-English speaking students. At TESOL ’98 we premiered our approach to ESL literacy – a text, Reading and Writing Basic English for adults (or young adults) with little or no knowledge of written English and a Teacher’s Manual with lots of hands-on activities and step-by-step instructions for novice literacy instructors.

The publishing of these texts followed many years of working with immigrant and refugee students and learning from them what they needed to know.

New Leaf now offers two additional student texts: English Basics, a faster-paced literacy text that includes sounds, numbers, and simple sentences and Real Basics for students making the transition from literacy to the regular ESL classroom. Each text also has a Teacher’s Companion, full of activities, templates and suggestions. Take a look at samples from these texts and see if they m ight be just what your students need.
