SOUND SIGN LESSON
This page introduces the new sound /k/ in the context of all the sounds previously acquired – the five short vowels and five consonants. Students learn that a ‘k’ precedes an ‘i’ or an ‘e’ and a ‘c’ precedes an ‘a’, ‘u’, or ‘o’ and a ‘ck’ usually comes at the end of a word, but all have the same sound.
The list of words following the introduction are all real English words, and students practice sounding them out on their own or with classmates or tutors.
This list can also be used as a sound-recognition dictation. The teacher says one of the items in a line, and the students circle the word they think they hear. Meaning is attached to the most useful of these words in fill-in dictation exercises with matching pictures from the Teacher’s Manual (see below).
LEARNING TO FORM LETTERS
Number and letter formations are covered in a separate section of the Student Workbook. The numbers, letters and number concepts (money, etc.) match the sequence of introduction in the first section. Students who have just “picked up” writing and who come from non-Roman alphabets may appreciate knowing the direction and order in which to make their strokes, particularly if they can practice without drawing too much attention to themselves.
INTRODUCING TIME
At this point, students know the numbers 0 to 60 and digital time. This page introduces them to the concepts of “after” and “to”. Later they’ll learn “quarter”.
SAMPLES FROM TEACHER’S MANUAL
Many additional reproducible materials are available only in this Manual. There are also page by page explanations of ways to introduce Student Workbook lessons and other detailed teaching suggestions.

INTRODUCING LARGER NUMBERS
SOUND AND NUMBER CARDS
These pages may be duplicated on cardstock for use in class. Individual students or groups of students receive packets of cards containing all the sounds or numbers they have been introduced to. The teacher says a word, dollar amount, date, etc. and the students move the cards around until they think they’re in the correct order. The teacher can circulate and repeat the word or number for those having trouble. There are also separate picture and word cards to match and read.
LISTEN AND WRITE EXERCISES
The numbered blanks are a sample dictation fill-in exercise from the Student Workbook. The teacher dictates specific words (listed in the Teacher’s Manual) based on the sounds students have acquired to this point. Students listen and fill in the blanks in their texts. When the class has completed and corrected the dictation they learn the meaning of the words and the teacher distributes the picture sheets duplicated from the Teacher’s Manual. Students select a word from the dictation to write under each picture and the teacher circulates and checks what they have written.
